Serbian Church attacked over controversial law

Mar 6, 2009

Officials in the Serbian government and the Western press have singled out the Serbian Orthodox Church, the largest denomination in Serbia, for an attack because of its opposition to a controversial law that is, critics say, misnamed as a “law against discrimination” but whose ambiguity on the issue of homosexuality and religious sects would expose all religious faiths in Serbia to legal badgering and government sponsored mandate to ban religion.

“A Serbian official says that opposition from Serbia’s Orthodox Church is stalling the approval of a key law against discrimination… The law is part of pro-EU reform,” reported Associated Press and thus, critics say, passed to the world an erroneous clich? that the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) is a backward, anti-European discriminatory institution.

A pro European leader in the Serbian Parliament, Dragan Markovic Palma, said that he will vote against the bill.

“If homosexuals have to lead Serbia into Europe, then we’ll stay in Serbia,” Palma said.

In Serbia, the opposition to the law has fostered a remarkable and cohesive inter-denominational and interfaith solidarity.

Catholic Church, Evangelicals and other Christian groups have banded together with the Serbian Orthodox Church to oppose the law because of the ambiguities.

Serbia’s Islamic Community has also joined the coalition, as did Serbia’s chief Rabbi.

The secretary of the Islamic Community of Serbia, Eldin Asceric, confirmed that the Islamic Community has been in consultations with the Serbian Orthodox Church.

“From SPC we got some complaints and, as they explained it, it is a question of some double meanings from two amendments, that can affect the SPC, but also all other religious organizations, and that we seek extra time so that those issues could be precisely defined,” said Asceric.

Asceric said that, along with Serbia’s Rabbi Isaac Isiel, they will respond verbally.

Catholic Church in Belgrade, report the media, has confirmed that they agree with the complaints of other churches and religious communities on the issue.

“Catholic Church is not against the law against discrimination but only that it needs to be refined because it has many unclearities that would bring this Church in a situation to be discriminated against because of its position,” said Milutin Novakovic, spokesman for the Catholic Church in Belgrade.

Leader of Serbia’s homosexual Queer Movement, Predrag Azdejkovic attacked the Church as being discriminatory.

“The SPC rests on that discrimination and it wants to keep its privileges,” said Azdejkovic.

Azdejkovic accuses Serbia of being an “instrument of the church”.

“If we look at Serbia, where on every corner pops out some church, where almost every?hospital has a name of some saint, religious studies in schools, icons in government institutions, rosaries are the greatest modern hit, where there are massive fasts and atheists are viewed from aside, we realize that we live in an Orthodox Serbia,” said Azdejkovic.

Azdejkovic then issued the warning to the church that they are in line to be dealt with.

“But don’t worry, soon you will come up in the line,” warned Azdejkovic.

Who says? B. Tadic? He is not the voice of the people,he is just a puppet of the west, and the west is going down. If you are from the UK you have noticed this.

point 18 in the law exposes religion to be sued by gays and force them to rewrite what their religious scripture says.

point 21 can be used to define religion as a sect and so be banned

  7. EU is a new totality. We lost free media in Czech republic, all must be political-correct. If you say true you are signed as extremist or euroskeptic and you are persecuted. No freedom of speech in highschool. It is terrible – we lost freedom of speech on academical land! It is EU normalisation. They want destroy all real values.

this is all the work of george soros and his “open society institute”whose NGOs are all over Serbia and Europe.THey promote homoswexuality, drugs, abortion etc.this is all to destroy the old family and society way of life.He wants to destroy the Orthodox Church beecause his greatest prize is Russia and all her vast mineral wealth. This is the same man who wants to buy the trepca mine in kosmet because its estimated worth is 15 billion dollars.

Nobody should be discriminated against. There is room for all in this world as long as nobody tries to infringe on anyone’s rights.
Don’t be afraid of homosexuals. They are not the ones controlling the world. They are only used as pawns as well.
    Be afraid of the elites.

Everyone has a place and have the right to exist but NOT at the expense of others.

Every Christian recognizes, first, that he is a sinner. Has a faggot ever done that, for whatever reason? NO

Faggots blame Christians for being sinners when they themselves do not want to recognize their sin.

Who has made anyone perfect? God made Jesus perfect and humans killed him. What do you faggots complain.

Faggots are no different then all sinners.

    Repent then.

If homosexuals want to be homos, let them be in. (in the USA!) we do not need them in our country. Although, I would encourage them tring to go on our streets in our cities so that we can see them get kicked right off.

A homosexual is to me a person who is not created by God, therefore, does not deserve to have a religion. If I was to see a homo in church, I would kick him out in a matter of 2 seconds. If God created two sexes, it is obvious that it was for a reason. REPRODUCTION. If these homos believe that they can be gay, then they are not human. They do not believe in reproduction and to me, all you guys can do is win academy awards in the USA. WE DONT NEED A GAY SERB, AND WE”LL NEVER HAVE ONE.

    #7578
  13. Veljkovic

This isn’t even about guy rights, this ia giving them special rights! All people should have the same rights why do Homosexuals have to be in a special category?

This is about telling Serbia what to do!
Why didn’t they force Vatican to do the same when Italy was accepted in the EU.
PLEASE, they are trying to controll and then destroy us.

I just wanted to add, what somebody does in his bedroom it’s his own buissness, why do you need special treatments and laws because of your sexual choices? Don’t flash it before my eyes, keep it quite and in the your bedroom!

Good point Peggy on not being afraid. That is what the state is for, to protect citizens no matter who they are.

But also, those cannot have legal mandates to discriminate against church and religion. For that Queer leader to want to battle the church is insane. Church is not inciting people to violence against gays, but to compassion. What’s his beef then? It is hatered of believers.

    #7621
  17. Joe A

This then also means that orthodox christians can also be discriminated against….

I thought that christianity was all about loving one another but I guess I was wrong. No much different from islam then….

Religion is the curse of this world.

    #7638
  18. Veljkovic

    Joe,
The church says it’s wrong, all religions say it’s wrong, but on the other hand, God created all of us (if you are religious)that means there is a place for everybody on this world, if we respect each other and let everybody live in peace.I personlly don’t have a problem with what other people do in the bedrooms, it’s their choice.
By making specials laws my meaning is that you then make the diffrences even worse.
Everybody should have the same rights, why do guy people need special rights?
Why does EU impose that on Serbia and not on Italy and Vatican for example.
    Thats what is bothering me.

    #7641
  19. Peggy

Nobody should have more rights than their neightbour. Be it gays or straight. Church also has to be protected by law. It is a place of worship and everyone has the right to decide where and if to worship.
State should not meddle into religious institutions. No politician should have the right to tell the church what to do. This is a matter strictly for the church to decide.

If the church is being undermined in any way then those responsible must be removed from their posts as they are destroying the fabric of our society.
One way to destroy a country is to destroy it’s fabric. If Tadic is heading this way they he must be stopped.

Remember when we didn’t have a church during the Communist times? Do we want to go back down that dark road again?

    #7653
  20. this is a tool to breakdown society and turn Serbia into another sterile/anti-septic Holland or Belgium or Germany. This has been a tactic here in the USA also(California leading the way).Notice also what is happening in Greece(Thessalonika) where Orthodox Church has been attacked by “anarchists”…..rightly stated earlier-the elites are behind this….STANDFAST!

I suggest some of you ease off the homophobia. The law might be bad, but it is no excuse to start banditing homophobia and declaring if you want to be a “faggot” or “peder” then you can go to the US. The main critics say it is ambiguous, not “the faggots wanna do x to us.”

Don’t you get it? Laws against discrimination are there to protect everybody. Equal rights and everything.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that an institution like a church -whether that is orthodox, catholic or moslim or whatever fairy tail they believe in- can decide that a law shall not be adopted. Ever heard of separation of church and state? It means that state doesn’t interfer with church matter but it also means that church stays out of politics.

All these churches have blood on their hands and have oppressed people for centuries. We got better, longer and healthier lives when we started thinking for ourselves. People who disagree, should perhaps give up using medicine, cars, computers etc. These inventions are the result of secular scientific thinking, not the result of believing in some fairy tail.

Church gives you social fabric? Religious tiranny I guess is a form of social fabric. So was communism, another utopian fairy tail.

    This isn’t about homophobia,
it’s about that they are telling the Serbs what to do, and belittling our church.
Since when do you need a law to acceppt you sex prefrences?
The church has it’s moral aspects that come from the bible, you can’t expect that they will change that.
Has the Catholic church accepted gays?
In the Netherlands they even have a pedophile party, wow maybe we should give them one also, this is ridiculous, they only want to CONTROLL us.

This all a moot point. The EU is not expanding any further in the forseeable future due to economic problems banks in the EU have with capital loans they made in Eastern European countries which are going bad.
All of these demands being made by the EU to Serbia are only political cover for them because they know we wil never allow these “reforms” to pass.
We should avoid the EU and establish economic ties with the economic centers of the world that have far greater potential for growth than the EU
Serbia would then become critical for both the east and the west “uvijek je bio na?a sudbina”

  36. Zdravo Mr. Veljkovicand all good people. I can see that system of destroy and enslavement is the same in all countries. Orthodox unity is the best power against this cancer.

I love my land but I feel as stranger in place where I was born. All was changed in last few years. EU system (NWO) is very danger, in EU exists only one religion – money, money and money. It is supported religion. I can see the changes in last years…… It is terrible change. It is systematical destroy of czech society (I thing that not only czech), my nation is on highway to hell. I am affraid of next generation. Czech people change freedom for consum and comfort. It is very hard to see it when you can not change it. 1 person can not change this system. It is very sad to see as my land go down. And nobody want to see it! Our elitism sold us for 30 silver coins. I am ashamed for this system, for czech fiction government which sold your KosMet and now destroy czech society and nation.

Your people have luck in SPC, now I think that only ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY is real possible opposition of this. And inspiration for many students as me. Nowaday system is very hard and dirty game, we can not fight with it. Everybody who want to say true about this is there signed as extremist. We lost free media, all must be political correct. We lost freedom of speech in university land – not official but you must be in silence if you want to study. I think that is more dangerous as comunism. All this aspects are hidden. In comunism era people know it, people stayed together. Now it is all different. We are lost now! But your nation have future. Serbian future is hope for me. Your nation in this hard times for all good people is very strong symbol of hope for us. True must win! Sorry for my poor english, in this era it is not my favourite language. I must wait a few months, I hope that I pass my university degree and then I will start with serbian language. It is my engagement.

God bless Serbs, the last real nation in Europe!

If church becomes obsolete that country is doomed.

The elites have plotted this for a very long time. Destroy God and contaminate the church is what they are about to achieve.

Nothing short of revolutions will dislodge these demonic leaders. People have to take power back and stop serving Satan.

JoeA, Yeah I have heard of the separation of Church and State but even in the western world this is primarly an American ideal. England has it’s Church of England headed by non other than the British Monarch.

I have also heard of freedom of speech and even the leader of a Church be he the Pope or Patriarch has the right to speak his mind on moral and or politcal issues.

    #8333
  42. Jaroslav is exactly right…Americans could also learn alot about true freedom by looking to the example of Serbia and her people and history….just read about the Balkan War and WW1 !Let’s hope more and more people come to this revelation. The only hope against NWO demons….and that is no exageration!

    #8550
  43. The problem is that Serbia (and also the other Serbo-Croatian-speaking-areas in the Balkans) struggle with modern concepts of religious freedom and separation between church and state, and between religious affiliation and ethnicity/nationality.

The Balkans did not pass trough the revolutionary/evolutionay mindset changes that swept Europe from the end of Middle Ages until the 20th century. And the clans that dominated the Balkans did not change their mindset even after the World Wars.

Serbia, as a independent, modern and democratic nation-state, is still a very recent phenomenon ? it is, in fact, just nine years old. before that, for all its history Serbia and its previous incarnations were authoritarian, nationalist, male-dominated, church-dominated, militaristic society. And that will take some years to change.

    #8584
  44. Veljkovic

    Why should it change?
There is nothing wrong with holding on to morals and normes.
Serbia is just fine like it is, go and change Afghanistan or Iran…
