Germany confirms arrest in Kosovo

Nov 22, 2008

German Foreign Ministry has confirmed the arrests of three German citizens in Kosovo, and said that the German Embassy in Pristina is in contact with the local authorities, German media reported on Friday.

The individuals have been arrested by the authorities in Kosovo under a belief that they were involved in a bombing attack of the EU office in the province.

The arrested men are Robert Cohler,47, Andreas Brunken, 41, and Andreas Jakel.

“They don?t have diplomatic passports and they have no relation to the German Embassy. The three men arrested are all in Kosovo in personal capacity,” said chief of police in Kosovo.

German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung quoted circles of the European Union Kosovo mission EULEX as unofficially speculating that the arrested German citizens might have been acting as secret agents.

The German Embassy in Pristina did not give any details about the arrested persons and said that it was “an ongoing confidential case,” Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported.

The daily Die Welt reported that a spokesperson for the Kosovo Police Service could not give any data on the identities of the arrested persons or possible motives.

“It is too early for that,” Die Welt quoted the spokesperson as saying.

There is sufficient ground for further investigation of the arrested individuals, a source said.

The source said that the arrested persons are Germans from Germany and not born in the territory of the former Yugoslavia.
