The early morning blast caused serious damage to the mosque in the Bosnian-Croat
part of the ethnically divided city, said police spokeswoman Lejla Trivic.
No one was in the building at the time.
Many Bosnian Muslims returned to their prewar homes in the Bosnian-Croat
suburb of Jasenice and had repaired the mosque, which was damaged in the
1992-95 war.
The head imam in Mostar, Salem Dedovic, called the attack disturbing,
particularly since it happened during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Mostar's mayor, Ljubo Beslic, a Bosnian Croat, condemned the attack
and called on citizens to stay calm and help the police find the perpetrator.
Since the end of the war, Mostar has been divided between Catholic Croats
and Bosnian Muslims and tensions between the two communities occasionally
lead to violent incidents.
