Kosovo not a bargaining chip, Bush

June 6, 2007 -- Kosovo was not used as a bargaining chip during his discussions with Russia's President Vladimir Putin said US President George Bush during a roundtable with travel pool at the Kempinski Grand Hotel in Heiligendamm, Germany.

"I talked to [Putin] about Kosovo the other day, and I don't recall missile defense coming up. In other words, it wasn't a quid pro quo," said President Bush.

"So -- he's got deep concerns about Kosovo, and so do we. It's an issue that we're just going to have to continue to work with him on," remarked Bush.

US is pressing for a quick UN resolution Serbian province of Kosovo that will define its status. US favors proposed plan by Marti Ahtisaari that wants to grant independence to the Serbian province by bypassing necessary approval by Serbia.

President Bush reiterated his support for the Ahtisaari plan during the roundtable.

"We believe we ought to move the Ahtisaari plan forward through the United Nations, and he's got reservations about it," said Bush.

The vote at the UN on the Kosovo status has been postponed to after the G-8 meeting held in Heiligendamm, Germany.
