Montenegro To Destroy
Weapons Ahead Of NATO Membership
AFP
PODGORICA, Montenegro --Montenegro signed an agreement with the U.S.
Monday to destroy outdated weapons as a condition for the Balkan country's
eventual admission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
"The U.S. has approved some $2 million for the destruction of a large
quantity of outdated small arms stocked in Boka Kotorska Bay, including
1,500 anti-aircraft missiles," Montenegrin Defense Minister Boro Vucinic
told reporters here.
Montenegro last year joined NATO's Partnership for Peace program, seen
as the first step towards full membership in the military alliance.
The Adriatic state, which separated from a union with Serbia in mid-2006
following a referendum, must destroy outdated arms in order to comply with
NATO standards.
