SOFIA, Mar 24, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The joint military drills of the Bulgarian and the United States' armies are going to take place between April 6 and April 9, the Bulgarian Defense Ministry announced Monday.

The purpose of the tactical exercises, named "Thracian Spring 2008", is to increase the operative compatibility between Bulgaria 's land and air forces and the U.S. Air Force.

Bulgaria will participate in the drills with infantry regiments and seven Su-25 and one An-26 planes. The U.S. Air Force will send four C-130 Hercules aircraft to participate in the drills.

The drills coincide with the arrival of 500 U.S. troops and 18 U.S. Air Force planes, which are going to secure the NATO Summit in Bucharest, capital of Romania, from Bulgaria's territory. The U. S. aircraft will be able to fly over, land and refuel in Bulgaria.
