Barroso hails Bulgaria's ratification of Lisbon Treaty
March 21, 2008 10:38 AM

BRUSSELS, Mar 21, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Friday welcomed Bulgarian parliament's approval of the Lisbon Treaty.

"I would like to congratulate Bulgaria on the successful approval of the Treaty of Lisbon by the Parliament today," Barroso said in a statement.

"The first year of membership of the European Union (EU) has brought significant benefits to Bulgaria," he said.

Bulgaria is the sixth member state to approve the Lisbon Treaty, after Hungary, Slovenia, Malta, Romania and France.

The Lisbon Treaty, signed by EU heads of state and government last December, will make EU's much needed institutional reforms possible.

The entry into force of the treaty requires the ratification of all 27 EU member states.
