France To Cut Nuclear Warheads To Less Than 300

March 25, 2008

CHERBOURG, France (AP)--President Nicolas Sarkozy said Friday France will cut its nuclear arsenal to less than 300 warheads.

Sarkozy said France would reduce its airborne force of nuclear weapons by one third. He said that would leave France will less than 300 warheads. Many of those are aboard submarines.

Sarkozy says he is firmly committed to France's nuclear deterrent. He called it the nation's life insurance policy. But he also said military spending needs would be re-examined.

The French president was speaking Friday at the inauguration of a new nuclear submarine, "The Terrible." It was his first major speech on France's nuclear deterrent since he took power last May.
