Serb party to stay in Croat government

March 26, 2008 11:34 AM

ZAGREB, Croatia-A party of ethnic Serbs in Croatia says it has decided to stay in the government despite the government's recognition of Kosovo, which has been strongly opposed by Serbia.

The party has participated in Prime Minister Ivo Sanader's coalition government since elections last November. One of its members is a deputy premier, the highest position to be held by an ethnic Serb here since the 1991-5 Serbo-Croat war.

Croatia recognized Kosovo's independence last week, prompting the Serb party to consider pulling out of the government. But its leader, Vojislav Stanimirovic, is saying Wednesday that the party will stay, because any other decision could harm the position of Serbs in Croatia.
