Bosnian Serb disabled war veterans demand higher pensions

March 26, 2008 9:09 AM

BANJA LUKA, Bosnia-Herzegovina-Several hundred Bosnian Serb disabled war veterans are demanding to speak to the prime minister about raising their disability pensions, having broken through a police cordon guarding the Bosnian Serb government building.

The former Bosnian Serb Army soldiers, many in wheelchairs or on crutches, are beating police officers Wednesday with banners saying "we also have children," and "give us our dignity back".

The veterans say they will start a hunger strike if they are not given a 50 percent raise. Their average pension is €100 (US$155) a month. Ministers in the government of the Bosnian Serb mini state make 20 times that amount.
