Thaci supports Tadic victory

May 09, 2008

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP)--Kosovo's prime minister said Friday he believes the upcoming elections in Serbia won't affect Kosovo, but he still hopes pro-Western forces will prevail.

Hashim Thaci told reporters in Ljubljana he doesn't expect a miracle in Sunday's vote, but said he thinks "democracy will definitely win" there.

Thaci insists Kosovo is an independent and sovereign state and therefore Serbs will "vote and decide for themselves" only in the elections.

Thaci also said Serbs should focus on the future, not the past.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February. Serbia insists the move was illegal. Analysts believe a victory in Serbia for the ultranationalist Radicals  - as predicted - could renew tensions in Kosovo.
