UN mission in Serbia's Kosovo province known as UNMIK said that Serbian local elections held in Kosovo will be declared illegal.

"Serbian authorities conducted these elections in the full knowledge that they were acting in defiance of UNMIK’s exclusive mandate to authorize elections in Kosovo under UN Security Council resolution 1244," said official.

"Those ‘local elections’, their outcomes, and the Serbian municipal institutions for which they purported to elect representatives are all without legal standing or effect in Kosovo. Illegal elections cannot have legal consequences," said a UN press release.

UN administrator Joachim Rücker praised Kosovo's Muslim Albanians for not turning to violence saying that "People of Kosovo displayed their maturity today by remaining calm and supporting the maintenance of public order."

UNMIK spokesperson Alexander Ivanko repeated that the international administration in Kosovo would not recognize the results of Serbian local elections, adding that their holding is against UNSCR 1244. Ivanko said that official Belgrade was aware with of this position but continues to violate this resolution.
