Bosnians protest increase in lawmakers' salaries May 14, 2008 11:49 AM SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina-About a thousand citizens are gathering in front of the Bosnian Parliament to protest a planned increase in lawmakers' salaries to as much as eight times the national average. Lawmakers inside are discussing a proposed law that has outraged many Bosnians. It would raise the salaries of lawmakers and ministers from €1,000 (US$1,543.90) to €2,000 (US$3,087.80) a month. The country's average is €315 (US$486.33). The unemployment rate is about 40 percent. Lawmaker Zlatko Lagumdzija, the head of the Social Democratic Party, which organized the protest, said Wednesday he is against the law, which, he said, also raises the salaries of policemen and soldiers, who earn about €315 (US$486.33) by €15 (US$23.16) "so they keep quiet."
