Talks on US-Greece visa-free travel set back

May 14, 2008 4:55 PM

WASHINGTON-A U.S. official says that negotiations to allow Greek citizens to travel to the United States without visas have been set back.

Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Richard Barth says that Greek officials backed out of a draft agreement last month. The United States passed a law last year aimed at expanding its visa waiver program.

Greece had been on track to be the first new member.

Talks have been complicated by the European Union's objection to individual member states negotiating with the United States. It wants to negotiate entry for all member states not already in the program at once.

Barth told a congressional panel Wednesday that the setback with Athens means that Greece has moved back in the line of countries seeking to join.
