May 13, 2008 9:57 AM

ATHENS, Greece-Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, arrived in Greece Tuesday for a four-day visit and talks with the country's new church leader.

Bartholomew met with Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens, who was enthroned in February.

Ieronymos' predecessor, Archbishop Christodoulos, who died of cancer on Jan. 28, often had tense relations with Bartholomew.

During his stay in Greece, Bartholomew, who is based in Istanbul, Turkey, is due to visit an air force base in the central Greek city of Larissa. He also has scheduled meetings with Greek President Karolos Papoulias and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

More than 95 percent of Greeks are baptized Orthodox Christian.
