NATO to keep current force strength in Kosovo

 May 15, 2008 11:55 AM

SLATINA -NATO's commander for southeastern Europe says the force will maintain it's heavy presence in Kosovo, months after the new country declared independence from Serbia.

Adm. Mark Fitzgerald says the 16,000-strong force will not cut its numbers until Kosovo's police and justice system gain strength and, in his words, "are able to enforce the laws."

On Thursday, Fitzgerald toured Kosovo's tense northern region, where the force had clashed earlier with Serb protesters angry at Kosovo's declaration of independence.

Kosovo's authorities will seek to establish control over the Serb-dominated north when the new country's constitution comes into force on June 15.
