20 kilos of heroin seized at Bulgarian border July 01, 2008 12:00 PM SOFIA, Jul 01, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- Bulgarian customs officers seized 20.32 kg heroin at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint on Monday, local press reported Tuesday. The heroin was hidden in a special compartment in a car trunk. The 39-year-old driver, a Dutch citizen, was arrested. He was traveling from Turkey to the Netherlands, police said. Authorities said the seized heroin was worth more than 1.8 million leva (about 1.45 million U.S. dollars). Bulgaria is a key transit route for drug smuggling from Asia and the Middle East to markets in western Europe. Over the last eight years, Bulgaria's Customs Agency has confiscated over 19.8 tons of drugs, which were incinerated in 19 separate procedures.
