Greece hit by heat wave

July 08, 2008 6:54 AM

ATHENS, Greece-Greece is sweltering through its first heat wave of the summer and authorities have appealed to people to curb the use of electricity as demand nears record levels.

Temperatures are expected to reach 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 Fahrenheit) Tuesday and Wednesday. Greece's power company has warned of potential power cuts as the use of air conditioning increases energy demand.

Electricity authorities say nationwide energy consumption was expected to reach 10,200 megawatts Tuesday. The record is 10,600 megawatts, reached in 2007.

The Health Ministry has warned the elderly and those with breathing problems to limit the time they spend outdoors. Municipalities are opening air conditioned facilities to the public.

Temperatures are forecast to fall Wednesday night.
