July 07, 2008 3:56 PM

KIEV, Jul 07, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- Visiting Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom said Monday that his country supports Ukraine's accession bid to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU).

After meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko in Kiev, Solyom told a news conference that his country adheres to the opinion that Ukraine's European prospects should remain open, adding Hungary is also ready to make every effort for a consensus to be reached on Ukraine's joining NATO's Membership Action Plan during the alliance's summit in December this year.

The two leaders also exchanged views on issues of common concern, in particular in border and customs sectors.

Yushchenko also called on Hungarian investors to participate in the development of sporting and tourist infrastructure as part of the country's preparations for the Euro 2012 Football Championships.

Solyom arrived here on Monday for a state visit to Ukraine.
