Balkan militaries to enhance military co-op

ANKARA, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Balkan Chiefs of Defense (CHODs) highlighted the importance of regional military cooperation at the second session of the Balkan CHODs conference held in Antalya province of southern Turkey on Monday.

The Balkan CHODs expressed their strong will to further enhance military cooperation among Balkan states to meet regional security challenges at the meeting.

The Balkan CHODs approved a number of joint military activities to be conducted in the following years, including joint training, education and exercises, said the release of the meeting.

The meeting also emphasized good neighborly relations and reiterated the solidarity and commitments stated in the first meeting in Athens, said the release.

The Balkan CHODs expressed their confidence that the establishment of a Coordination Group and two sub-working groups have provided the required mechanisms for the continuation of the conference, said the release.

Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Yasar Buyukanit said restoring a positive security atmosphere among countries was the responsibility of armed forces.

"The participating countries exchanged views on many joint military activities. We have the full belief that this forum will have an important function to improve military relations among Balkan countries," Buyukanit said.

As a regional body for further developing cooperation, the Balkan CHODs conference will hold its next session in Serbia in 2009.
