Town in England seeks to secede to Scotland July 8, 2008 SERBIANNA Berwick-upon-Tweed which was acquired by English in 1482 from Scotland wants to hold a referendum to secede from England and join up with Scotland. "If that is what they want, we would be delighted to see Berwick back in Scotland," says Pete Wishart, the Scottish National Party member of the U.K. Parliament for North Tayside. Independence from the English grip is encouraged by the Scottish National Party which recently won control of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh from the Labour Party. Scottish National Party says the boundary would be easy to shift saying that the U.K. Parliament would find hard to turn down referendum results showing Berwick vote to support secession. Berwick-upon-Tweed changed hands 13 times in wars between the English and the Scots. In 1305 arms of the executed Scottish freedom fighter William "Braveheart" Wallace were displayed in Berwick. The town was acquired by English in 1482. In 1999, the UK Parliament passed a legislation through which England acquired 6,000 square miles of once-Scottish North Sea waters. Scotland saw this as a move by English to acquire gas and oil fields from Scotland should Scotland seek freedom. During the 1856 Crimea War peace treaty with Russia, UK was still officially the Kingdom of "England, Scotland and Wales and the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed," but Berwick was left out the negotiations with Russia. In 1966 Berwick councilor made peace with Soviets by asking them "to tell the Russian people that they can sleep peacefully in their beds."
