BELGRADE, Jul 08, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- The Stari Grad Plain on the southern Croatian Adriatic island of Hvar has been added to UNESCO 's World Heritage List, the 7th historical site in Croatia to be inscribed on the World Heritage List, Croatia's Culture Ministry announced on Tuesday.

The Croatian landscape was named a World Heritage site on Monday by the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee meeting in the Canadian city of Quebec, where the panel said ancient stone walls and shelters still bear "testimony to the ancient geometrical system of land division" used by ancient Greeks.

The plain has "remained virtually intact over 24 centuries," the committee said.

The Stari Grad Plain is the largest and most fertile plain on the Adriatic islands. The original agricultural activity of this plain, mainly centering on grapes and olives, has been maintained since Greek times to the present.

The other six Croatian sites on the World Heritage List are the Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian, the Old City of Dubrovnik, the Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in Porec, the Historic City of Trogir, the Cathedral of St James in Sibenik, and Plitvice Lakes National Park.
