Karadzic could go on hunger strike

July 31, 2008 10:22 AM

BELGRADE, Serbia-Radovan Karadzic's lawyer says his client will go on hunger strike if he is not allowed to defend himself in his genocide trial.

Svetozar Vujacic says "it is his basic right to defend himself." He says Karadzic "will insist on that even if he has to go on hunger strike."

Vujacic was speaking in Belgrade as Karadzic appeared for the first time Thursday at the U.N. Tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands.

During the appearance, Karadzic waived his right to an attorney in the courtroom. Vujacic is part the legal team that plans to advise Karadzic outside the court.

Karadzic was arrested July 21 in Serbia after more than 12 years as a fugitive. He is charged with 11 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
