Greece:
Banks attacks in arson spree
November 13, 2008 6:10 AM
THESSALONIKI, Greece-Police in Greece say five banks have been damaged
in arson attacks in the northern city of Thessaloniki.
All the attacks were carried out early Thursday using small cooking
gas canisters. Police say no one was hurt and that branches of Greece's
Eurobank, Agriculture Bank and Geniki Bank were targeted.
Arson attacks by anarchist groups are common in Greek cities.
Arsonists have carried out a spate of attacks in recent days in support
of a hunger strike at Greek prisons that started Nov. 3. Organizers of
that protest say more that 5,000 prisoners have joined the hunger strike
to demand better conditions. The government has not confirmed the figure.
