Macedonia appoints new ambassador to Serbia April 28, 2009 2:03 PM TIRANA, Apr 28, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The outgoing Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski signed a decree on Tuesday, appointing Ljubisa Georgievski as the country's new ambassador to Serbia. Diplomatic relations between Macedonia and Serbia were strained after Macedonia recognized Kosovo last October, which declared unilateral independence from Serbia in February 2008. Macedonia's former ambassador to Belgrade Aleksandar Vasilevski was declared persona non grata and was expelled from Serbia in consequence of it. Relations between the countries have improved since then. In an effort to further smooth out relations, Serbia's Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic plans to visit Macedonia in early May. Ljubisa Georgievski, Macedonia's former ambassador to Bulgaria and ex-speaker of Macedonia's Parliament, is expected to travel to Belgrade and take up his new post in May.
