Montenegro court rules in 2004 editor slaying

April 28, 2009 4:32 AM

PODGORICA, Montenegro-A Montenegrin court has convicted a suspect in the 2004 slaying of a prominent opposition editor and sentenced him to 30 years in prison.

The Montenegrin Higher Court has ruled that karate expert Damir Mandic was guilty of the "well-planned and premeditated" murder of editor Dusko Jovanovic.

Mandic was first arrested shortly after Jovanovic was gunned down in May 2004. Mandic was tried and acquitted in 2006 but that ruling was overturned after an appeal, and a retrial was held.

Mandic's lawyer Velibor Markovic said late Monday his client will appeal the new verdict as well.

Jovanovic was the editor of Dan daily, which was highly critical of Montenegro's government. His killing shocked the tiny Adriatic nation of some 600,000 people.
