Serbia expect visa-free travel this year
April 28, 2009
SERBIANNA

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ivica Dacic expressed high certainty that Serbia will be included in the White Schengen list that allows Serbs to travel without visas through most of the EU.

Dacic, who is attending in Prague a ministerial conference on partnership in migrations, said that all interior ministers and EU officials have supported visa liberalization for Serbia.

Dacic expects a positive report of expert missions of the European Commission in May, after which the EU countries will discuss the issue.

"These expectations are based on real political goals and joint plans with the EC," he said.

In all bilateral meetings, nearly all countries have supported visa liberalization for Serbia, Dacic said.

All 46 participating countries are expected to support the draft declaration of the conference, which is very important for Serbia as one of central issues regarding the honoring of all pre-conditions envisaged in the road map for integration in the EU, he said.

Germany has expressed its strong support for the process of visa liberalization and Serbia's integration in the EU, MP Michal Gloss said Monday in Belgrade.

Completion of this process for Serbia and other countries in the region would guarantee lasting peace in the Balkans, Gloss said.

Gloss was interested in measures Serbia is taking to cope with global recession.

Serbian parliament said in a release that the talks focused on fostering bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economy, and on visa liberalization

The meeting was attended also by German Ambassador to Serbia Wolfram Maas.

Members of the Serbian business club Privrednik met with Gloss and Maas.

Meanwhile, the Council of Europe assessed that Serbia has made progress in fulfilling its obligations, and it underscores full support to the continued integration of Serbia with the European Union.

Council of Europe said that so far there have been no requests for debating the Kosovo issue at the Council and said that the Council "Parliamentary Assembly could be in the awkward situation of having to consider the Kosovo issue".
